Reminder for Upcoming Swim Meet Information
Dear Parents,
As we approach our first swim meet of the season, I wanted to remind you of all the important information you will need to make the day go smoothly for your swimmer(s).
The swim meets will be held every Saturday during the season, starting at 8:00 a.m. However, please note that swimmers must be at the pool earlier than that for roll call and warm-ups. Meets typically end between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., so please plan your day accordingly.
It is crucial that swimmers check-in with the coach at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday morning at each meet. At sign-in, swimmers will receive their events and event numbers. Please remind your swimmer to report to the Ready Bench when their event is called, as parents working the Ready Bench will not search for swimmers. It is your responsibility to ensure your swimmer is present and ready to swim at the appropriate time.
We also encourage parents of young swimmers to have their children stay with them between events. Swimmers should rest and stay out of the sun between events to be at their best. Please remind your swimmers that the pool area is not a place for wild behavior or horseplay.
As the meet progresses, your child's events will be spread out over the meet, and relay swimmer substitutions happen often and sometimes at the last minute. Please do not leave the swim meet before the last possible relay your swimmer could qualify for, as your team may need you. Although your swimmer might be finished swimming before the meet is over, please stay for the whole meet. The other swimmers on the team need your encouragement, and it is really fun to be around when the final score is announced and we win!
What to bring:
Please label all your swimmer's items and bring the following items for your swimmer:
- Team suit and shirt
- Swim cap and goggles (extras if you have them)
- Towels
- Old blanket for swimmer to lie on
- Fruit juice, energy drinks, and lots of water
- Money for concessions
- Snacks, lunch (see below for suggestions)
- Cards, travel games, books, etc.
- Swim Ear Drops
Additionally, please bring the following items for yourself:
- Lawn chairs and tarp for shade, canopy (setup outside fenced pool area)
- Sun hats
- Sunscreen
- Umbrellas
- Money
- A Good Book
- Food and Drinks
Food Suggestions:
Please note that dinner the night before the meet should consist of high-carbohydrate foods like pasta, pizza, baked potatoes, and rice. Breakfast on meet mornings should include pancakes, French toast, muffins, toast, cereals, low-fat dairy products, and fruit, avoiding anything with much sugar or fat. Donuts are for the adults and non-swimmers! Lunch during the meet should include sandwiches without mayonnaise or butter, low-fat luncheon meats and cheeses, and avoiding fried foods, nuts, or seeds. Snacks and fruit juices, fresh or dried fruits, low-fat crackers, pretzels, popcorn, fig bars, or oatmeal cookies are also good choices.
Other important information:
- 1st shift for concession starts at 6am.
- Swimmer check-in is at 6:45am.
- Warm-ups start at 7:15am.
Be sure to have your swimmer at the pool on time for warm-ups. Warm-ups are not only important to prepare the swimmer for the morning's races, but they are also the time during which the coaches must verify attendance and make final lineup changes. It is very important that each swimmer stays at the meet until it is over. If you are unable to stay for the entire meet, please notify the coach prior to leaving. Even though your child is not listed in a relay, he/she might be used as an alternate, and his/her name would not appear on the heat sheet. In this situation, if a swimmer leaves early, three other swimmers would not be allowed to compete.

Parking at Meets:
Parking is limited around the Newport pool. Parking is allowed in the parking lot immediately around the pool area and the outer area of the parking lot at the Country Club (the areas closest to the pool). No swimming parking is allowed in the immediate Country Club Golf area, unless otherwise noted. Limited parking is allowed on Country Club Drive. Please do not block driveways, mailboxes, or intersections; please allow at least one car length from these areas. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING ON THE GRASS! Please use your better judgment when parking and remember to allow room for easy access of emergency vehicles. These rules apply to both Newport swimmers as well as the visiting team.
Your cooperation with this parking policy is required to help the Torpedoes develop and maintain good neighbor relations.
